Testing the DJI Ronin 4D with a Vintage Twist – Inspired by Adolescence.

There’s been a lot of buzz lately around the beautiful handheld tracking scenes in the new film Adolescence—shot on the groundbreaking DJI Ronin 4D. With that same energy in mind, we took advantage of the sunshine and hit the streets for some real-world handheld tests of our own.

Our setup?
DJI Ronin 4D paired with the classic Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 vintage lens—known for its signature swirly bokeh and nostalgic rendering.

Why the Ronin 4D + Helios Combo?

We wanted to test how this hybrid setup performs when it comes to tracking shots, handheld movement, and real-world lighting conditions. The Helios adds a dreamy, organic character that softens the Ronin’s ultra-precise stabilisation, offering a look that’s both cinematic and unique.

We have both the DJI Ronin 4D 8K Pro Combo Kit and the DJI Ronin 4D 6K Combo Pro Kit Available for hire.

What We Learned

  • The Ronin 4D’s Z-axis stabilization makes a huge difference for walking and tracking shots, especially on uneven ground.

  • The Helios lens added gorgeous vintage character and flare, especially when shooting wide open in natural light.

  • The setup stayed impressively compact and nimble, making it ideal for guerilla-style or run-and-gun shooting.

Inspired by Adolescence?

We can see why filmmakers are reaching for the Ronin 4D—especially when paired with unique glass like the Helios. The combo offers creative freedom, beautiful image rendering, and a stable handheld feel with just the right amount of imperfection.
